Before there was the Overdriver, there was the Power Boost.
In 1969, Sola Sound — the same London company behind the legendary Tone Bender — released the Colorsound Power Boost. It was designed to do one thing: push the front end of a tube amp until it screamed. Jeff Beck used it to get that thick, explosive lead tone. David Gilmour ran it into a cranked Hiwatt to create the soaring sustain that defined Pink Floyd's Wall-era sound. Marc Bolan plugged in and made T. Rex the heaviest glam band on the planet.
It wasn't a fuzz. It wasn't an overdrive. It was something else entirely — a raw, full-frequency blast of power that made everything in the signal chain sound bigger, meaner, and more alive.
The Tru-Fi Mini '69 ColorDriver is a handbuilt recreation of that original Power Boost circuit, built right here in Cumberland, Maine using the same BC109 transistors as the 1969 original. Compared to its sibling the '71, the '69 runs smoother and warmer — a pure rock and roll machine that cleans up beautifully with your guitar's volume knob and stacks into other pedals like it was born to.
What makes the '69 special:
- The smoother sibling — Where the '71 ColorDriver gets nasty and aggressive at full gain, the '69 stays warm, round, and musical. It's the one you leave on all night.
- Switchable 9V/18V operation — The original ran on two 9V batteries at 18 volts and was almost unusably loud. We give you both voltages in one switch. 9V for gritty, compressed bite. 18V for the full headroom and transparency of the original — tamed by the master volume.
- Added Master Volume — The missing control the original desperately needed. Run it as a subtle clean boost or slam your amp into oblivion. Your call.
- BC109 transistors — The exact same spec as the 1969 Colorsound Power Boost. This is the real thing.
- 2/3 the size of our vintage series — Pedalboard-friendly with top-mounted jacks. Same Tru-Fi shaped enclosure.
- Handbuilt in Maine — One builder. One pedal at a time.
Use it as an always-on boost at the front of your chain and everything after it sounds better. Use it as an overdrive with the drive at noon and your amp on the edge of breakup. Use it to push a Big Muff for that Gilmour-style transparent solo tone. Or crank it all the way and ride the line between overdrive and fuzz. This circuit does it all — that's why Beck, Gilmour, and Bolan all reached for the same pedal.
The original Colorsound Power Boost. Handbuilt from scratch. Finally on your board.

NateThis pedal is warm and wide and feels so good that it makes me not want to put the guitar down. Great customer service too - prompt response to my inquiry and order. Thanks, now back to playing.Zachary Allen'69 Colordriver
I have and love the original Tru-Fi Colordriver, but the smaller footprint of the '69 ended up being the perfect solution for my pedalboard. I typically struggle to bond with overdrive sounds, but the power boost circuit has a special something that really does it for me. The Colordriver retains all of the power and vintage grittiness of the original while offering modern versatility and top quality construction. The 9/18V switch adds another layer of tonal options. I'm a fan of Tru-Fi's unique standard enclosure, but I hope to see more "mini" options in the future. I'm sure I'll be grabbing a '71 soon just to see how they compare, but for now the '69 is the perfect latest piece to my tone puzzle.Gordon GroatThe ‘69 Colordriver
This thing rules. Treble to 70%, bass at 40%, gain at 50%, level pushing the amp a little. ‘59 Plexi Marshall with ‘62 Fender Strat. Heaven!!!!!!Scott D AndersonSmaller footprint, same huge tone
Love it and the 18 and 9 volt switch makes it even more versatile. Love the smaller footprint. Miss the wooden box, but the new boxes are very nice too.Leave a Review
