In 1971, Sola Sound unleashed the Colorsound Overdriver — the secret weapon behind Jeff Beck's searing lead tone on Blow by Blow and the thick, singing sustain that defined David Gilmour's early work with Pink Floyd. It was louder, meaner, and more dynamic than anything else on the market. And then, somehow, the world forgot about it.
We didn't forget.
The Tru-Fi ColorDriver '71 Mini is a faithful recreation of that legendary circuit, handbuilt in Cumberland, Maine using the same BC184 silicon transistors that gave the original its unmistakable voice — raw, aggressive overdrive at full gain that melts into smooth, musical boost when you back off the drive knob. It's the rare pedal that does both beautifully.
What makes the '71 different:
- Switchable 9V/18V operation — Run it at 9V for compressed, gritty vintage growl. Flip to 18V for more headroom, clarity, and punch. Two pedals in one switch.
- Added Master Volume — The original had no volume control, which meant it was always screaming. We fixed that. Dial it back to match your bypass level or push it to slam the front of your amp.
- BC184 transistors — The same spec as the 1971 original. Not "similar." Not "equivalent." The same.
- 2/3 the size of our vintage series — Same Tru-Fi shaped enclosure, but pedalboard-friendly with top-mounted jacks.
- Handbuilt in Maine — Every unit soldered, tested, and voiced by hand. Not a factory. Not an assembly line. One builder, one pedal at a time.
At low gain, it's a clean boost that makes your amp sound like a bigger, better version of itself. Push the drive past noon and it crosses into thick, fuzzy overdrive territory that stacks beautifully with whatever's already on your board. Crank everything and it's a full-blown fuzz that can hang with the best of them.
This is the forgotten giant of British overdrive — the circuit the history books overlooked — built in America and ready to prove itself all over again.
